John Mongan, MD, PhD, is the Associate Chair for Translational Informatics and Professor of Clinical Radiology (Abdominal Imaging and Ultrasound section) in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco. He is board-certified in both diagnostic radiology and clinical informatics.

His research focuses on artificial intelligence in medical imaging. He was the senior author and primary investigator on a project that developed artificial intelligence for the detection of pneumothorax (collapsed lung); in partnership with General Electric, the algorithm developed in this project achieved FDA clearance and is currently commercially available on portable X-ray machines. He is the lead author on the Checklist for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging (CLAIM), a guideline used by several journals to promote reproducibility in artificial intelligence publications, and is the lead author on a publication drawing lessons for the safe implementation of artificial intelligence in medicine from the 737 Max disasters.

Dr. Mongan is nationally and internationally recognized as a leader and expert in artificial intelligence and machine learning. He chairs the Artificial Intelligence Committee of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA, the world’s largest radiology specialty society). Through this committee, he organizes the assembly and curation of large multi-institutional medical imaging datasets and artificial intelligence (AI) contests using these datasets. These contests, conducted annually, attract over a thousand entrants. He serves on the editorial board of the journal Radiology: Artificial Intelligence. He has lectured on artificial intelligence at the annual meetings of the German Congress of Radiology, the Colombian Congress of Radiology, the international Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Society (MICCAI), and the RSNA. He lectures on AI regulation and governance as part of the National Imaging Informatics Course organized by the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine.

Dr. Mongan is a leader in IT and informatics governance within UCSF. He chairs RITEC (Research IT Executive Committee), the top-level governance organization for research IT, which serves as the central forum for budgetary prioritization for research-related IT expenditures at UCSF. He co-chairs the UCSF Health Imaging AI Oversight subcommittee, which approves purchase and implementation of clinical imaging-related artificial intelligence.

Dr. Mongan has experience as an expert witness for patent litigation in the areas of artificial intelligence, medical imaging and dental imaging.
