Dr. Pietro Mascagni is a surgeon with a passion for Surgical Data Science. He leads the Video-Based Assessment and Computer-Assisted Intervention Research Facility at Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS (Rome, Italy) and serves as Clinical Research Advisor for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer Science projects at IHU-Strasbourg (France). Pietro has pioneered AI applications for safe surgery, with over 90 publications that have been cited almost 2,000 times since 2018. He is regularly invited speaker at major EU, US and Asian conferences and has founded or directs several initiatives to promote surgeons’ involvement in AI, such as the AI Masterclass at EAES, the SDS Summer School at IHU-Strasbourg, and CLINICCAI at MICCAI. Currently, he sits on the Board of Directors of the Società Italiana Chirurgia Endoscopica e Nuove Tecnologie (SICE) and he is an invited member of the SAGES Surgical Data Science Task Force and of the American Surgical Education AI Task Force. In addition, he is Associate Editor for AI at the European Journal of Surgical Oncology, and he is Co-founder and Scientific Director of the Global Surgical AI Collaborative.
