Dr. Sohn is a cardiothoracic radiologist focused on the clinical translation of artificial intelligence in radiology, including the application of large (vision) language models and autonomous agents to improve radiological workflow efficiency and radiology reporting. His work bridges clinical cardiothoracic imaging, applied machine learning, quantitative imaging, and human-centered AI deployment.
His clinical and translational research includes lung cancer imaging and screening, interstitial lung abnormality and interstitial lung disease imaging, imaging biomarker discovery in chest imaging, and clinical translation of 0.55T low-field lung MRI. With a background in medicine and engineering, he applies computational and engineering methods to clinically relevant problems in radiology.
Dr. Sohn’s AI research spans radiology-specific text processing, imaging-report integration, content-based image retrieval, automated protocoling, workflow triage, and decision-support tools. Recent work includes evaluation and development of large language model and vision-language model applications for radiology reporting, communication, and agentic workflow assistance.
He is an education co-chair of the UCSF Center for Intelligent Imaging and mentors students, residents, scientists, engineers, and postdoctoral scholars interested in radiology, especially radiology AI and cardiothoracic imaging. The team welcomes students, clinicians, scientists, engineers, and postdoctoral scholars through various internship and research engagement programs.
